The million-dollar question. Maybe not a million dollars, but it certainly can be an intimidating task, especially if you have a large amount of built-in real estate to fill. The key to bookshelf decor is a balance of high, medium, and low heights. They create a perfect dance that is pleasing to the eye. The items do not have to be expensive but something that I have learned styling shelves is that they have to be BIG. Make sure you measure when purchasing. A lot of stores like Target, Zara, H and M, and At Home carry impressive sizes that will make a statement in your project. Examples linked below!
In the rendering phase of this project, I used, vases, decorative objects, artwork, and coffee table books to cover a large amount of shelf space. I used baskets along the top shelves to create weight and a place for the eye to rest. It also creates storage for the homeowner.
One last piece of advice-don't overcomplicate it! And remember that design is subjective. If you like it, that's all that matters.
